So today was our planned slow day to recover from transatlantic travels – to let anything swollen fade. We woke up late (after breakfast), and had received a text saying that our bags had been locating in ‘a’ country and were on their way…..
Once up and moving we signed into our Oslo passes and headed on the local tram from Holberg Plass to Stortorvert where we found a breakfast/lunch for me and a sandwich for Renee. Getting off the tram we entered into a small fresh flower market which was delightful.
After this we walked over to Christiania Torv, a square surrounded by old buildings. In the center is a statue of a hand pointing down as apparently this was where the king decided the city would be rebuilt after a great fire in 1624. Medieval Oslo stood to the east of where the City Center now lies. It’s where they used to behead people – including the women found responsible for that fire….. We sat back and enjoyed the sun at Cafe Skankse on the edge of the square.
Walking down the hill to Radhusplass we approached the fjord Oslo is built on and also the giant cruise ship there. After a brief stop in the park it was up the hill to the Akershus fortress, which sits on top of a small hill. It has only been open since 2002, it is a classic fortress but the Norwegian Defense College is still there and the Norway resistance museum (which was closed). There is an interesting memorial to Norwegian resistance fighters executed there by German forces in 1945.
It was interesting to find a statue of Franklin Roosevelt overlooking the fjord – when the wife of the king fled the Germans she and the family stayed in the white house with the Roosevelt’s and they remained friends for a longtime.
Back to the hotel and the Cafe I tried last night and then a small grocery shop. Still no suitcases. One interesting Norwegian trivia – so in the store you buy a loaf of bread and there is a slicing machine – they don’t sell sliced bread. You buy the loaf and slice it yourself.
We returned to the hotel to prepare for tomorrow – if we don’t have our bags by Wednesday it will be time for some emergency shopping. At this point I don’t have a lot of hope on our bags but I eagerly await an opportunity to be surprised.
Loved your commentary and the pictures. Tx for sending link. I shared with Len, Teri and Linda. Sounds fun.Good luck with your luggage
Looks like a great place, just sorry for the no bag routine which seems to be the norm these days. Have a great evening!
